Supposedly, the cyclone struck Bombay on 6 June 1882. The name of the novel derives from the Glass Palace Chronicle, which is an old Burmese historical work commissioned by King Bagyidaw in 1829. Ghosh employs a factual background for the invented events in the novel, drawing upon Ross' Memoirs which were published in 1923.
